The USU Faculty of Pharmacy, in collaboration with the Indian Consulate Medan, held Ayurveda Day 2025 under the theme “Ayurveda for People & Planet”. The event featured panel discussions, lectures, and international collaboration highlighting holistic health and environmental sustainability.
USU PHARMACY PUBLIC RELATIONS – The auditorium of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, was filled with an atmosphere of international collaboration when the Indian Consulate Medan, in cooperation with the USU Faculty of Pharmacy, held the commemoration of Ayurveda Day 2025. Carrying the theme “Ayurveda for People & Planet”, this event became a forum for exchanging knowledge about India’s traditional health system while emphasizing the importance of a healthy lifestyle in harmony with nature.
Ayurveda, meaning “the science of life,” has been practiced in India for more than five millennia. This health system emphasizes the balance of body, mind, and soul through the use of herbs, healthy diet, and natural lifestyle. Its presence in today’s global society is highly relevant as the world faces the burden of chronic diseases, the fast-paced modern lifestyle, and environmental challenges due to climate change.
The Consul General of India Medan, in his remarks, emphasized that Ayurveda is not merely a traditional health practice but also a philosophy of life that places humans as part of a larger ecosystem. “Ayurveda teaches us to care for the body and mind without forgetting the responsibility of preserving the earth. This is the principle we want to highlight in the commemoration of Ayurveda Day 2025 in Medan,” he stated.
As the co-organizer, the USU Faculty of Pharmacy welcomed this collaboration. The Dean of the Faculty emphasized that such activities are vital to broaden the horizons of students and academics in understanding diverse health systems worldwide.
In addition, lecturers and researchers of the Faculty of Pharmacy USU see Ayurveda as a gateway for developing sustainable pharmaceutical innovations. With its rich biodiversity, Indonesia holds enormous potential to develop herbal health products in line with Ayurveda principles.
The event opened with remarks from the Indian Consulate Medan and the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy USU. The following session featured a panel discussion on “The Application of Ayurveda in Modern Public Health”, where Ayurveda experts explained how simple practices such as a balanced diet, the use of specific herbs, and meditation can improve quality of life while reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
This event was not merely a cultural ceremony but also had tangible contributions toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being): Ayurveda provides preventive approaches through healthy lifestyles, in line with efforts to improve public health and reduce disease burden.
SDG 4 (Quality Education): Through public lectures and panel discussions, the event enriched students’ and lecturers’ knowledge of traditional health systems worldwide, opening space for cross-cultural learning.
SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production): Ayurveda emphasizes the wise use of natural resources, exemplifying how herbal utilization can be carried out without harming the environment.
SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): The event strengthened international partnerships between Indonesia and India in health, education, and research, creating synergy for sustainable development.
Through Ayurveda Day 2025, the Indian Consulate Medan and the USU Faculty of Pharmacy demonstrated that human health and the preservation of the earth cannot be separated. This event not only strengthened diplomatic relations but also served as an educational and reflective space on the importance of environmentally friendly holistic health.
With full support from the academic community and the public, Ayurveda Day is expected to become an annual agenda that continuously enriches the perspectives of Indonesia’s younger generation while opening the path for global competitiveness in herbal pharmaceutical research collaboration.
