History

1969
In early February 1969, the Faculty of Natural Sciences (FIPIA) at Universitas Sumatera Utara officially established the Pharmacy Department. The department was supported by lecturers who were alumni of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM), most of whom also worked as pharmacists in Medan. The first head of the Pharmacy Department was Drs. R.A. Soekemi, Apt.
1982
In 1982, the Faculty of Natural Sciences (FIPIA) was renamed the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Sumatera Utara.
2000
In 2000, the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara, Prof. Chairuddin P. Lubis, DTM&H., Sp.A(K), proposed elevating the status of the Pharmacy Department to become the Faculty of Pharmacy. To achieve this, the Pharmacy Department formed a team led by Dr. M. Pandapotan Nasution, MPS., Apt., who at that time was the Head of the Pharmacy Department. The team completed the proposal for the status change in December 2000. The proposal was then submitted to the Rector through the Dean of FMIPA. However, the process was delayed the following year due to a circular from the Directorate General of Higher Education (Dirjen Dikti), which prohibited the establishment of new faculties in Indonesia.
2003
In 2003, Universitas Sumatera Utara gained the status of a State-Owned Legal Entity University (BHMN) based on Government Regulation No. 56/2003, dated November 11, 2003. This new status reopened the opportunity to form new faculties. Provisions outlined in the regulation, along with the decision of the Board of Trustees (Majelis Wali Amanat) No. 1/SK/MWA/I/2005 dated January 8, 2005, allowed the conversion of departments into faculties.
2005
On May 26, 2005, a revised proposal to elevate the status of the Pharmacy Department to the Faculty of Pharmacy was resubmitted to the Rector through the Dean of FMIPA. Subsequently, on July 4, 2005, the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara issued Decree No. 822/J05/SK/KP/2005 to establish a Preparation Committee for the Faculty of Pharmacy. The committee was tasked with preparing the necessary reports and arrangements for the establishment of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
2006
On May 31, 2006, the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara sent a letter to the Directorate General of Higher Education (Dirjen Dikti), seeking approval for the status change of the Pharmacy Department to the Faculty of Pharmacy. Dirjen Dikti responded with Letter No. 2635/D/T/2006, dated July 7, 2006, which stated that the status change could proceed based on a Rector's decision without requiring government funding. On August 8, 2006, the Rector officially issued Decree No. 1050/J05/SK/KP/2006, formally establishing the Faculty of Pharmacy as the 11th faculty of Universitas Sumatera Utara. Subsequently, on September 28, 2006, Dr. Eddy Marlianto, M.Sc., who was the Dean of FMIPA, was appointed as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
2007
On December 14, 2006, the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara issued Decree No. 1655/J05/SK/KP/2006, appointing Prof. Dr. Sumadio Hadisahputra, Apt., as the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy for the 2006–2010 term. He was officially inaugurated on Friday, January 26, 2007. The Faculty of Pharmacy was formally inaugurated on May 5, 2007, in a ceremony attended by the Board of Trustees, deans, institutional leaders, and alumni from across Indonesia.
2017–2020
Between 2017 and 2020, the Faculty of Pharmacy at USU experienced significant progress in research and community engagement. In terms of research, the faculty secured funding for 95 research titles from Universitas Sumatera Utara, 50 titles from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education, and 4 titles from the Ministry of Health, with a total amount of Rp9.675 billion. Additionally, 176 scientific publications were indexed in reputable journals, including Scopus and Web of Science. The faculty also launched its scientific journal, Indonesian Journal of Pharmaceutical and Clinical Research (IDJPCR), indexed in Garuda, Google Scholar, and Base Index.

Pharmaceutical Dosage Form Technology Laboratory
The Pharmaceutical Dosage Form Technology Laboratory is a consolidation of four previously independent laboratories: Non-Sterile Dosage Form Technology I, Non-Sterile Dosage Form Technology II, Cosmeceutics, and Sterile Dosage Form Technology. Since their establishment until 2021, these laboratories have served primarily as educational laboratories. This integrated laboratory supports approximately 9–12 practical course topics for the Undergraduate Program in Pharmacy and 4–7 topics for the Diploma Program in Pharmacy and Food Analysis at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU). The practical materials are designed to prepare students for careers in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulation industries, particularly in Production, Quality Control, and Research & Development. The laboratory also aims to encourage entrepreneurship among students to develop their own cosmetic products or become consultants in beauty clinics.Beyond teaching, the laboratory facilitates student research for theses and dissertations from various academic programs both within and outside USU, as well as faculty research funded by internal and external institutions. Research topics frequently include the formulation and evaluation of pharmaceutical dosage forms such as gels, creams, and nano-sized products with functions such as anti-aging, anti-acne, antioxidant, anti-xerosis, sunscreen, hair dye, facial masks, facial cleansers, and tablets derived from both synthetic and natural ingredients. However, limitations in laboratory equipment often hinder research activities, forcing researchers to wait for access to facilities in other laboratories within USU, or even at institutions in other regions, including Sumatra and Java.In addition to its educational and research functions, the laboratory also engages in community service activities, including the production of hand sanitizers, basic cosmetic formulations, and public education on safe and appropriate cosmetic usage. As of 2021, research activities in the Sterile Dosage Form Technology Laboratory remain limited due to inadequate infrastructure and equipment.
