Universitas Sumatera Utara officially inaugurated Prof. Dr. Sumaiyah, S.Si., M.Si., Apt. as Permanent Professor of the Faculty of Pharmacy on September 8, 2025. The inauguration emphasized her dedication in education, research, and the development of herbal medicines based on local wisdom for national health resilience.

USU PHARMACY PR – Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) officially inaugurated Prof. Dr. Sumaiyah, S.Si., M.Si., Apt. as a Permanent Professor in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The inauguration ceremony was solemnly held on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Student Hall of Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan.

 

 

The inauguration of a Permanent Professor is the formal appointment of Prof. Dr. Sumaiyah as a professor in Pharmaceutical Sciences. On this occasion, she also delivered her inaugural scientific speech entitled: “Optimizing the Development of Herbal Medicines Based on Local Wisdom for National Health Resilience”, emphasizing the importance of utilizing local natural resources in the advancement of modern pharmacy.

 

 

This inauguration is a form of recognition of Prof. Dr. Sumaiyah’s dedication in education, research, and community service in the field of pharmacy. As a pharmacist and researcher, her contributions are crucial in the development of natural product-based medicines with national and international competitiveness.

 

 

The event began with opening remarks by the Rector, followed by the reading of the Decree of appointment as Professor by the Academic Senate. Subsequently, Prof. Dr. Sumaiyah received the honorary medal and delivered her scientific oration. The ceremony concluded with congratulations from the guests and a group photo session.

 

 

The inauguration is strongly aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – Her research promotes the use of natural resources as safe, effective, and affordable medicines, strengthening national health resilience.

  • SDG 4: Quality Education – This academic promotion enhances USU’s capacity to provide quality higher education and excellent research in pharmacy.

  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – Her focus on herbal medicine development fosters collaboration between academia, the pharmaceutical industry, and research institutions.

  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – Her research contributes to the creation of sustainable and environmentally friendly herbal medicine production systems.

  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – The cross-sector collaboration built in her research reflects real partnerships for the advancement of science and technology.

 

In his remarks, Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, stated: “This inauguration of a professor is not only recognition of academic achievement, but also a tangible contribution of USU in advancing science with a direct impact on society at large.”

 

With this inauguration, Prof. Dr. Sumaiyah is expected to continue inspiring the younger generation, particularly in pharmacy, to keep innovating and addressing national health challenges through research based on Indonesia’s biodiversity.
