Lecturers from the USU Faculty of Pharmacy carried out a community service program in Pantai Cermin, Serdang Bedagai, focusing on education about degenerative diseases. The initiative aimed to raise awareness and promote prevention of conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and osteoarthritis.

USU Faculty of Pharmacy Public Relations – As part of the implementation of the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi), lecturers from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), conducted a community service program themed "Education on Degenerative Diseases and Their Prevention." The activity was held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at Pantai Cermin, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra.

This program consisted of health counseling and educational outreach, focusing on increasing public understanding of degenerative diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and osteoarthritis. It also aimed to promote preventive measures through healthy lifestyle habits, balanced nutrition, and regular health monitoring.

The event was conducted by a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Pharmacy USU, representing various academic disciplines. They collaborated with local village officials and community leaders. The participants included residents of Pantai Cermin, especially adults and elderly groups.

Held in the coastal region of Pantai Cermin—an area with limited access to health information and services—the initiative sought to reach communities vulnerable to non-communicable diseases.

Degenerative diseases are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Indonesia. The lack of awareness about risk factors and prevention strategies inspired the lecturers to provide direct education to the public as a concrete effort to improve awareness and quality of life.

The outreach activities included interactive lectures, distribution of educational leaflets, blood pressure screenings, and a Q&A session between the speakers and participants. The materials were delivered in easily understood language and tailored to the local social context.

This initiative contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by enhancing public knowledge on disease prevention and promoting healthy lifestyles.

  • SDG 4: Quality Education, by providing science-based health information accessible to the public.

  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration between the university, local communities, and village authorities.

Through this program, the Faculty of Pharmacy USU reaffirms its role as an agent of change, committed not only to academic excellence but also to meaningful contributions to society toward a healthier and more empowered Indonesia.
