The USU Faculty of Pharmacy held an education and training program on making natural sunscreen at Pharmaca Vocational Pharmacy School Medan on August 8, 2025. This activity equipped students with knowledge, skills, and entrepreneurial insights in safe cosmetics made from natural ingredients.

USU PHARMACY PR – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), once again demonstrated its commitment to implementing the tridharma of higher education, particularly community service. This time, the USU Pharmacy lecturer team organized an activity entitled “Education and Training on Natural Sunscreen Production as a Safe Cosmetic Product” held at Pharmaca Vocational Pharmacy School Medan.

The activity consisted of counseling, health education, and hands-on practice in producing natural-based sunscreen. USU Pharmacy lecturers provided knowledge about the dangers of ultraviolet (UV) exposure to skin health, the importance of sunscreen use, and how to utilize natural ingredients available in the surroundings to create safe, affordable, and potentially economic cosmetic products.

The event was attended enthusiastically by dozens of students and teachers of Pharmaca Medan Vocational School. They not only listened to the presentations but also actively asked questions, engaged in discussions, and directly practiced making natural sunscreen preparations in the school laboratory under the guidance of the lecturers.

The activity was held on Friday, August 8, 2025, in the laboratory of Pharmaca Vocational Pharmacy School, Medan. The choice of location aimed to allow students to immediately practice the theory they learned in their own learning environment.

According to the community service team, sunscreen is one of the essential cosmetic products widely used by the public, but not all available products are safe for long-term use. Through this training, students were introduced to the benefits and potential of natural ingredients that are gentler on the skin and can be developed into entrepreneurial products with added value.

The event was conducted interactively, combining lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and laboratory practice. Students were divided into small groups to focus on trying natural sunscreen formulations. At the end of the session, each group presented their work, while the lecturers provided evaluations and feedback to ensure the products met basic safety standards.

This program supports the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being): raising awareness of the importance of protecting skin health from UV exposure.

  • SDG 4 (Quality Education): providing practice-based learning experiences relevant to pharmacy vocational students’ competencies.

  • SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): opening entrepreneurship insights through economic value-added natural cosmetic products.

  • SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production): encouraging the use of natural raw materials and eco-friendly product development.

  • SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): strengthening synergy between universities and vocational schools to improve education quality and students’ skills.

Through this activity, it is expected that students of Pharmaca Vocational Pharmacy School will not only gain new knowledge about natural sunscreen but also be motivated to innovate in the field of safe cosmetics. In addition, the collaboration between the USU Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaca Vocational School is expected to continue in the form of sustainable programs that support skill enhancement, entrepreneurship, and public health.
