Faculty members from the USU Faculty of Pharmacy conducted a community service activity for students of SMK Pharmaca located at Jl. Tinta No. 45 Medan on Tuesday (2/8). The community service activity involved around 40 students from the 12th grade of SMK Pharmaca. It began with a pre-test to assess the students' basic knowledge of the material to be disseminated, followed by a presentation from the faculty members. The material covered the background of using natural ingredients such as coffee and rice as active components in cosmetic products like body scrubs and peel-off masks. A video was also shown regarding the formulation and preparation of cosmetic products.
In addition to education on product preparation, students received training on sales and marketing management, which will be useful for those interested in becoming entrepreneurs in the future.
A demonstration of making body scrubs and peel-off masks was conducted, with students guided by the faculty and student team. Students were instructed on how to create body scrubs and peel-off masks using coffee and rice.
The students showed great enthusiasm and active participation in the community service activity. They were engaged in listening, asking questions, answering, and in the process of making the body scrubs and peel-off masks.
Following the activity, students who had made the body scrubs and peel-off masks were given a post-test to assess their knowledge after the education and demonstration. They also filled out a questionnaire evaluating the body scrubs and peel-off masks they had created. The questionnaire assessed preferences regarding color, scent, texture, and packaging, which had been designed by the community service team.
At the end of the event, the team presented souvenirs and provided production equipment to the school for future use in product creation. Additionally, body scrubs and peel-off masks, as well as a preparation module, were given to the teachers and some students of SMK Pharmaca.
"The goal of this activity is for students to apply the steps for making body scrubs and peel-off masks and to enhance their entrepreneurial skills," said the team leader.
"The main objective of this activity is to teach SMK students how to make body scrubs and peel-off masks using natural ingredients that effectively clean the skin. This will help produce creative SMK alumni with good business management skills, leading to economic independence and improved welfare for SMK graduates," she added.
