USU Faculty of Pharmacy lecturers provided education on making herbal tea from nipah leaves in Guntung Village on Thursday (4/8). This activity included hands-on practice and counseling on the immunomodulatory benefits of herbal tea as well as marketing and entrepreneurial strategies.

USU Faculty of Pharmacy lecturers carried out community service by educating residents about making herbal tea in Guntung Village, Tanjung Tiram District, Batubara Regency, Thursday (4/8). The team was led by Embun Suci Nasution, S.Si., M.Farm.Klin., Apt., with members Muhammad Fauzan Lubis, M.Farm., Apt., and Adika Fajar Putra, SEI., MM.

With the help of several Undergraduate Pharmacy students, namely Nada Syafwa Atanti Panjaitan, Dhea Fadhillah Arfy, Adhe Permata Syafruzar, Mega Silviana, Murobbi, and Inggianti Putri, this community service team conducted counseling in Increasing Understanding of Covid-19, Body Immunity, and Community Income through Empowering Nipah Leaves as Immunomodulatory Herbal Tea. The activity was carried out using the Active Participant Learning Method (CBPA), where participants actively received education related to increasing knowledge and skills about Covid-19, body immunity, and community income by empowering nipah leaves into herbal tea as an immunomodulator.

Not only education, but also hands-on practice in making immunomodulatory herbal tea from nipah leaves, with the aim that participants are able to make herbal tea and are motivated to explore creative ideas for using natural materials into health products.

“The immunomodulatory efficacy of this herbal tea from nipah leaves has been proven from immunomodulatory activity testing at the Pharmacology Laboratory of the USU Faculty of Pharmacy and herbal tea requirements testing at the Phytochemistry Laboratory of the USU Faculty of Pharmacy, including moisture content test and ash content test which have met SNI requirements,” said Team Leader Embun Suci Nasution, S.Si., M.Farm.Klin., Apt.

“The team also presented marketing materials and simple business plans in order to foster an entrepreneurial spirit in the participants, delivered by Mr. Adika, a lecturer in Management at the USU Faculty of Economics and Business.”

The Head of Guntung Village, Rusdi, expressed his gratitude that USU chose Guntung Village as a community service partner. He also hopes to establish cooperation in the future, because for him, the community not only gains knowledge and skills, but is also motivated to explore creative ideas using natural materials into useful products and can increase family economic income.
