PHARMACY USU PUBLIC RELATIONS – The Faculty of Pharmacy at Universitas Sumatera Utara once again organized an international academic activity through the Guest Lecture Visiting Professor on Organic and Medical Chemistry with the theme “For Scientific Lecture Design and Synthesis of New Bioactive Heterocyclic Compounds: Synthesis, In Vitro and Silico Studies.” The event took place on Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 09.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. at the Faculty of Pharmacy USU and featured international speaker Prof. dr. Hina Siddiqui.

This international guest lecture was conducted as part of the Faculty of Pharmacy USU’s commitment to improving the quality of education and research, while also expanding global academic collaboration in the field of pharmacy, particularly organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry. The event was attended by lecturers, students, researchers, and members of the academic community who are interested in the development of bioactive compounds as potential future drug candidates.

In her presentation, Prof. Hina Siddiqui explained various scientific approaches in the design and synthesis of bioactive heterocyclic compounds that hold great potential in the fields of health and pharmacy. Heterocyclic compounds are a group of chemical compounds widely used in modern drug development because they possess diverse biological activities. Through the lecture, participants were introduced to stages of compound synthesis, methods for testing biological activity in vitro, and the application of in silico approaches using computational technology to predict compound activity and effectiveness before further development.

Prof. Hina Siddiqui also emphasized that the current advancement of medicinal chemistry is no longer focused solely on the synthesis of new compounds, but also on research efficiency through the integration of digital technology and computational analysis. The in silico approach is considered capable of helping researchers accelerate the identification process of drug candidates with lower research costs and improved accuracy. This has become one of the important innovations in the development of modern medicines for various diseases.

The guest lecture was conducted interactively and received enthusiastic participation from attendees. This was evident from the active discussion and question-and-answer sessions covering various topics, ranging from organic compound synthesis techniques and technology-based pharmaceutical research development to opportunities for international research collaboration. Students and lecturers took advantage of the opportunity to discuss directly with the speaker regarding the latest developments in medicinal chemistry and bioactive compound research.

In addition to providing scientific insight, the event also served as a platform to strengthen academic relations between the Faculty of Pharmacy USU and international academics. The presence of the visiting professor is expected to open opportunities for research collaboration, joint scientific publications, academic exchanges, and the development of innovations in pharmacy and health that can benefit the wider community.

The implementation of this activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being through the development of pharmaceutical and health research; Goal 4: Quality Education through improving the quality of higher education and international knowledge transfer; Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through the development of technology-based scientific research innovation; and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals through strengthening global collaboration among academics and higher education institutions.

Through the organization of this international guest lecture, the Faculty of Pharmacy USU hopes to continue fostering an innovative academic atmosphere, expanding international networks, and encouraging the emergence of outstanding research that can make meaningful contributions to the advancement of pharmaceutical and health sciences in Indonesia and globally.
