USU Faculty of Pharmacy lecturers held a Community Service program at Medan Sunggal Sub-district, focusing on the fortification of moringa leaves and mung bean flour in cookies as an effort to prevent stunting in toddlers. This program aims to support the national movement to prevent stunting through local food innovation and education to the community.

USU PHARMACY PUBLIC RELATIONS - Lecturers of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) carried out Community Service (PKM) in Medan Sunggal Sub-district, on Tuesday (10/9). The Community Service Team consists of the leader, Dr. apt. Denny Satria, M.Si., and members namely Dr. apt. Aminah Dalimunthe, M.Si and apt. Hafid Syahputra, S.Farm., M.Si.

This service is titled “Fortification of Moringa Leaves and Mung Bean Flour in Cookies as PMT (Supplementary Feeding) for Toddlers in the Program to Support the Movement to Prevent Stunting in Medan Sunggal Sub-district”. As is known, stunting is a disorder of growth and development of children due to long-term malnutrition. Stunting can be caused by malnutrition experienced by mothers during pregnancy, or children during growth. Currently, the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia is 21.6%, while the target to be achieved is 14% by 2024. For this reason, a joint effort is needed to achieve the set target, one of which starts from the smallest unit in society, namely the family.

Dr. apt. Denny Satria, M.Si, as the Head of the Community Service Team, conveyed the purpose of this service to provide education and workshops in the form of innovations in cookies made from moringa leaves and mung bean flour in a program to support the stunting prevention movement. In addition, this service also aims to provide strategies that can be carried out by the community to improve and develop the potential of the surrounding nature into quality and high-value products.

The service activities not only consisted of material presentation related to fortification, but also provided special services for toddlers in Medan Sunggal Sub-district to conduct developmental checks as an effort to prevent stunting. The examinations carried out include checking body weight, height, head circumference, and arm circumference.
