The Faculty of Pharmacy USU held a doctoral promotion exam for Sumardi, who presented his dissertation on Xylocarpus granatum compounds. His research highlights the plant's potential in inhibiting quorum sensing in P. aeruginosa and MRSA.
USU PHARMACY PUBLIC RELATIONS – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), once again held a Doctoral Promotion Examination (Open Defense) for the Doctoral Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences. This moment marked a significant milestone for Sumardi, a doctoral candidate who defended his dissertation entitled:
"Study of Chloroform: Methanol Extract of Xylocarpus granatum on the Regulation of Quorum Sensing in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)"
This dissertation explores the potential of natural compounds from Xylocarpus granatum in inhibiting quorum sensing mechanisms in two major pathogens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and MRSA, both known for their resistance and role in nosocomial infections. The study makes a valuable contribution to the development of alternative therapies for antimicrobial resistance.
Sumardi, a researcher and doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Pharmacy USU, has undergone a rigorous academic and research journey. The doctoral defense took place on Thursday, May 22, 2025, in the IMG-GT Room, Rectorate Building, USU, Medan.
This research holds strategic significance in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
The session proceeded solemnly with strong academic enthusiasm. The examination board was honored by the presence of the USU Rector and Chair of the Session, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., as well as promoters and examiners from leading academic fields in pharmacy and microbiology.
Sumardi successfully answered all questions and feedback from the examiners with solid scientific arguments, demonstrating his deep understanding of the research topic. With the completion of this session, Sumardi is one step closer to earning his doctoral degree and is expected to make a meaningful contribution to academia and sustainable pharmaceutical development.
