The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held a Doctoral Promotion Examination (Open Defense) for the Doctoral Study Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Odd Semester of the 2025/2026 Academic Year.

HUMAS FARMASI USU – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held a Doctoral Promotion Examination (Open Defense) for the Doctoral Study Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Odd Semester of the 2025/2026 Academic Year. On this occasion, Marianne appeared as the doctoral candidate with a dissertation entitled “Mechanism of Antidiabetic Activity of the Ethanol Extract of Pirdot Leaves (Saurauia bracteosa DC.).”

The open defense was conducted on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. WIB, at the IMT-GT Room, 2nd Floor, BPA Building, USU. This examination was open to the public as part of the academic commitment to transparency and quality in doctoral education.

The promotion examination was chaired by Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si. as the presiding chair. The promoter was Prof. Dr. Poppy Anjelisa Z. Hasibuan, M.Si., Apt., with co-promoters Prof. Yudani, S.Farm., M.Si., Ph.D., Apt. and Kamal Rullah, Ph.D. The board of examiners consisted of Prof. Dr. Muchlisyam, M.Si., Apt.; Prof. dr. Tri Widyawati, M.Si., Ph.D.; Prof. I Ketut Adnyana, M.Si., Ph.D., Apt.; and Dr. Aminah Dalimunthe, S.Si., M.Si., Apt.

In her dissertation, Marianne examined the mechanism of action of the ethanol extract of pirdot leaves as an antidiabetic agent. Pirdot (Saurauia bracteosa DC.) is known as a herbal plant traditionally used by communities to help reduce blood glucose levels. Through scientific and pharmacological approaches, this research aims to provide scientific evidence while strengthening the biological mechanism underlying the antidiabetic activity of the plant.

This research not only contributes to the development of pharmaceutical science, but is also aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being): Supporting efforts to improve public health through the development of alternative therapies for diabetes as one of the non-communicable diseases with high prevalence.

  • SDG 4 (Quality Education): Realizing high-quality higher education through innovative, evidence-based doctoral research.

  • SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure): Encouraging innovation in pharmaceutical products based on local natural resources with potential for further development.

  • SDG 15 (Life on Land): Optimizing the scientific and sustainable utilization of Indonesia’s biodiversity.

Through this doctoral promotion examination, the Faculty of Pharmacy USU once again demonstrates its commitment to producing doctoral graduates who are able to make tangible contributions to the development of science, public health, and sustainable development.
