Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) celebrates the graduation of 2,011 students, highlighting achievements like 47 national gold medals and 23 international gold medals in 2017. Other milestones include ISO 9001:2015 certification and a Three-Star QS Rating.

Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) celebrated the graduation of 2,011 students who completed their education between November 2017 and January 2018. The ceremony took place at the USU Auditorium on February 26–27, 2018. The graduates comprised 835 men (41.52%) and 1,176 women (58.48%), bringing the total number of USU alumni across all educational levels to 190,670.

 

In his speech, the Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Runtung, S.H., M.Hum., highlighted several notable achievements of USU, including institutional accomplishments as well as students’ and faculty’s academic and non-academic achievements at national and international levels.

 

USU students excelled by winning numerous gold medals in various competitions. In 2017, they secured 47 gold medals at the national level and 23 gold medals internationally. These international achievements include awards such as The Best Delegation Rome Model United Nations Conference in Rome, Italy; Gold Medal at the Kaohsiung International and Design Expo 2017 in Taiwan; First Prize at the IIA International Innovation Fair 2017 in India; and Gold Medal Folklore A Cappella at the Grand Prix of Nation Riga 2017 in Latvia, Eastern Europe, among others.

 

The Rector stated that, in its pursuit of international recognition, USU participated in the QS Rating program in 2017. On December 28, 2017, USU successfully achieved a Three-Star QS Rating. Following this milestone, the university team is currently compiling and completing documents to participate in QS Ranking.

 

Currently, eight study programs and one education unit at USU have received ISO 9001:2015 certification. The latest achievement in 2018 is the success of the USU Quality Management Unit in obtaining ISO 9001:2015 certification with zero findings from the British Standard Institution (BSI), a status rarely awarded by BSI.

 

In terms of human resources, USU has shown significant growth. As of February 2018, USU employed 1,620 lecturers, including 175 professors. To improve teaching quality and meet performance targets, USU has conducted recruitment and selection for permanent lecturers and non-civil servant education staff. Regarding accreditation, 84% or 130 out of 154 study programs at USU are accredited A or B.

 

In 2017, USU established eight Centers of Excellence, one Task Force, and two Research Centers. The university currently holds 13 patents, consisting of 10 national and 3 international patents, with 30 more patent applications in the process of registration at the Directorate General of Intellectual Property.

 

Meanwhile, USU lecturers and researchers conducted 440 research projects in 2017, along with 178 community service programs. Regarding Scopus-indexed publications, USU recorded 1,117 publications by January 2018, ranking 14th among universities listed in the Scopus database.

 

The best graduate in the non-exact sciences category was Eva Monica Sinaga, a Law student from the Faculty of Law, who graduated with a GPA of 3.93 (cum laude) in just 3.5 years. Meanwhile, the best graduate in the exact sciences category was Rica Asrosa, a Physics student from FMIPA, who graduated with a GPA of 3.66 (cum laude) in 3 years and 6 months.
