Pharmacy lecturers from Universitas Sumatera Utara conducted a community service program at SMK Martabe Sipirok, utilizing robusta coffee for cosmetics and providing eco-enzyme training. The activity involved USU lecturers, students, and laboratory staff.

PHARMACY PUBLIC RELATIONS USU – Pharmacy lecturers from Universitas Sumatera Utara conducted a community service program on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at SMK Martabe, Padang Bujur Village, Sipirok Subdistrict, South Tapanuli Regency, Sipirok. The program was led by apt. Dwi Lestari Priwitaningrum, Ph.D., with team members: Prof. Dr. apt. Julia Reveny, M.Si., Dr. apt. Sumaiyah, M.Si., and Dr. apt. Aminah Dalimunthe, S.Si., M.Si. Students who participated included Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) students: Fadhillah Arafah, Dira Kinanti, Balqis Nur Nasution, Febliani Fadilah; undergraduate Pharmacy students: Mulia Hariyani Pane; master's Pharmacy students: Nurul Harahap; and a laboratory staff member from the Faculty of Pharmacy's Cosmetology Laboratory: Yunita Andriani, S.Si.

This activity aimed to utilize natural resources, particularly robusta coffee found in South Tapanuli, as raw material for cosmetic production. The initiative served as a form of community service targeting students in the Nursing Assistant and Agribusiness Departments at SMK Martabe, Sipirok.

Robusta coffee, a local pride of Sipirok, is known for its high antioxidant content. Antioxidants in coffee extracts can help prevent premature skin aging, commonly marked by wrinkles, dullness, and dark spots. Additionally, dried and finely ground coffee grounds can be used as a skin exfoliating agent, aiding in the removal of dead skin cells and leaving the skin cleaner. Coffee and its byproducts, which are often discarded, can be transformed into cosmetic products such as face wash gel, scrubs, and moisturizing creams enriched with active coffee extracts.

The USU Pharmacy team also provided education on selecting quality cosmetics and their proper usage, alongside training on processing fresh coffee skins, typically discarded, into eco-enzyme.

The team expressed their gratitude to SMK Martabe Sipirok, especially to Principal Mr. Muhammad Khoir Syahbana, S.Si., the teachers, and the management of the Marsipature Hutana Be Education Foundation (YPMHB), particularly Mr. Ir. Yuriandi Siregar as the Chairman of the Foundation and Mrs. Siti Yulita Siregar, S.T., for facilitating the collaboration between YPMHB and the Faculty of Pharmacy, USU.
