USU PHARMACY PUBLIC RELATIONS - University of North Sumatra carried out community service at SD Muhammadiah 29 Sunggal, Deli Serdang Regency which took place on Saturday, August 31 2024. This time, the USU team led by apt. Dwi Lestari P., M.Si., Ph.D. from the Faculty of Pharmacy, raised the topic "Use of Natural Ingredients for the Formulation of Hand Washing Soap and Ecoenzymes". The innovation of using natural ingredients of chrysanthemum flowers and moringa seeds which are rich in antibacterial and antioxidant substances formulated in hand washing soap gel is taught to the public. Apart from that, fresh and unused parts of chrysanthemum and moringa plants as well as household ingredients such as leftover fresh fruit and vegetables can be used to make ecoenzymes which can later also be used as raw materials for cosmetics, as well as household cleaning fluids and plant fertilizer.

One important effort to maintain personal health is to maintain personal hygiene, both overall body and hand cleanliness. Hand hygiene really needs to be maintained because the hands are the part of the body that is most likely to come into contact with important parts of the face which can be a place for germs to enter the body, namely the mouth, nose and eyes. Based on research, 80% of disease germs spread through touch. Thus, hand washing soap preparations need to be produced to certain standards to ensure the safety and comfort of their use on human skin.

Based on research by lecturers and students from the service team, Moringa seed oil is known to have a high antioxidant content which can care for the skin, as well as containing antibacterial substances which can kill germs on the skin of the hands. White chrysanthemums are also known to have antibacterial and antifungal effects. This flower can be planted in the yard as a decorative flower and is also easy to obtain at the flower market in the city of Medan. "In this way, Moringa seed oil and chrysanthemum flower extract can be active substances in hand washing soap to keep hands clean from dirt and germs," said Dwi Lestari as head of the service team.

"This community service activity is mainly aimed at teachers and parents of SD Muhammadiyah 29 Sunggal students with the hope that they can pass on the knowledge and skills trained in this service activity to other students and parents in terms of maintaining personal hygiene and environment and use hand washing soap properly and correctly. Apart from that, the problem of managing fruit and vegetable waste in the household and the environment is a useful matter, one of which is ecoenzymes, which is also being trained which can later be disseminated by the teachers participating in the service. "Apart from that, they can also develop a business with hand washing soap products made from natural ingredients that are easily obtained and the ecoenzymes produced," said Dwi.

Dwi also explained that ecoenzymes could further be diversified into household health products (house cleaners, laundry liquid components), fertilizers, natural pesticides, as well as skin and hair care cosmetic products. "Overall, this service activity is expected to contribute to efforts to achieve the goals in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) priority 3 concerning Good Health and Well-being which guarantees a healthy life and improves the welfare of all people of all ages, priority 9, namely Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure , which aims to encourage innovation; and priority 13, namely Climate Action, which moves to act quickly to overcome climate change and its impacts," he explained further.

"This service activity includes the transfer of knowledge about the differences in the use of hand washing soap and hand sanitizer, how to use hand washing soap properly and correctly, as well as the transfer of knowledge about managing household waste into ecoenzymes which is carried out interactively. "Furthermore, the USU service team together with teachers and parents/guardians of students carried out the practice of making ecoenzymes from fruit skins, the fruit of which is a dish in this service event as well as making hand washing soap using chrysanthemum flowers and moringa seeds," explained Dwi.

Mrs. Lasmidah, S.Pd.I as the principal expressed her gratitude to the USU service team for providing useful knowledge that really helped teachers, parents and students at SD Muhammadiyah 29 Sunggal in processing waste and utilizing natural materials. According to him, this activity also provides inspiration for P5 activities for the elementary school students he leads.
