The Faculty of Pharmacy USU held a workshop on formulating ecoenzyme-based handwash products with students and teachers from SMK Martabe Sipirok. This program empowers the local community by utilizing coffee waste and promoting environmentally friendly innovation.

USU Pharmacy Public Relations – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), carried out a community service program involving students and teachers from SMK Martabe Sipirok. This event took place at the school in 2025 as part of the Faculty's commitment to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.

In this program, USU Faculty of Pharmacy lecturers and students provided training on formulating liquid handwash products containing ecoenzymes derived from coffee fruit peel from Sipirok. This collaboration also involved the Department of Nursing Assistance and the Agribusiness of Plantation Crops, enabling participants to not only learn about the importance of hand hygiene for health, but also understand the great potential of coffee peel waste that has long been underutilized.

The community service activity was initiated because Sipirok is known as a high-quality coffee-producing region. Unfortunately, coffee peel waste often poses an environmental problem. Therefore, USU Faculty of Pharmacy provided a solution by transforming coffee waste into eco-friendly ecoenzymes, which were then formulated into handwash products. This approach gave students and teachers new insights into science-based innovations that are practical and sustainable.

During the training, participants were taught step-by-step how to produce ecoenzymes and formulate the handwash liquid. Additionally, the team provided basic entrepreneurship knowledge so that the products produced could become business opportunities in the future, especially for students in the Agribusiness Department. For the Nursing Assistance Department, this product can serve as a learning tool that directly supports hand hygiene practices in the health field.

This community service program contributes to achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being): supporting handwashing habits as an essential part of public health.

  • SDG 4 (Quality Education): providing practical science-based skills to students and teachers.

  • SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production): reducing coffee peel waste through eco-friendly product innovation.

  • SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): strengthening collaboration between higher education and vocational high schools.

Through this activity, the Faculty of Pharmacy USU not only shares knowledge but also provides real solutions to environmental issues while encouraging local innovation. Therefore, this community service initiative serves as a strategic step in making education a tool for empowerment and sustainable development.
