7th Joint Working Group Indonesia-France at USU for Scientific Research Development

Medan-USU: France through its ambassador, Corinne Breuze was committed to increasing cooperation in education with Indonesia. This commitment marked the holding of the 7th Joint Working Group Indonesia-France at the Universitas Sumatera Utara, Monday (9/3). Corinne also emphasized that the French government will help develop research at USU, especially in the fields of health (medicine) and engineering.

 

This was stated by the French Ambassador during a press conference after opening the 7th Joint Working Group on Indonesia-French Cooperation in Higher Education and Research meeting at the IMT-GT Room, Rector Bureau, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Medan on Monday (9/3). The two-day meeting (March 9-10, 2015) carried the theme "How Education and Research Respond to Sustainable Development?". The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education, represented by the Director of the Directorate of Institutions and Cooperation of the Directorate General of Higher Education Prof. Ir. Hermawan Kresno Dipojono, MSEE, Ph.D, Rector of USU Prof. Dr. Syahril Pasaribu, Director of IFI Bertrand de Hartingh, representing the Mayor of Medan, Drs. Hasan Basri, MM, Rectors of several public and private universities in Indonesia. Also present were the Rector of Yogyakarta State University Prof. Dr. Rochmat Wahab who is also the Chairman of SNMPTN 2015 as well as the rectors of renowned universities in France.
 
Furthermore, Vice Chancellor IV of USU Prof. Ningrum Natsya Sirait during the press meeting emphasized that France was very interested in the USU Teaching Hospital (Faculty of Medicine) including the Faculty of Engineering. USU Hospital was projected to excel in tropical medical treatment and become an attraction for France to help develop scientific research related to tropical diseases. "So it's not the hospital operation, it's more about the research. France has good scientists and researchers, so currently we are trying to explore which things are priorities that can be cooperated. When we found them, we would match them," he said.

 

The Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education represented by the Director at the Directorate of Institutions and Cooperation of the Directorate General of Higher Education Prof. Ir. Hermawan Kresno Dipojono, MSEE, Ph.D in the press meeting also added, in addition to research development, cooperation with France is also in the domain of cultural exchange. Indeed, it is very good for both countries because it can improve the competitiveness of the nation. Increased cooperation that is currently being established, and he added, it covers cooperation in joint degree programs, double degrees, joint public in research and exchange of lecturers and students. French Ambassador Corinne Breuze said she hoped the cooperation would increase the interest of Indonesian students to study in France. Given, there were now around 1,500 Indonesian students in France.    

 

Many fields of study taken by Indonesian students are Engineering, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Health and Trade Management. France provides scholarships or health insurance, Indonesia provides scholarships for living expenses. Bertrand de Hartingh, Counselor for Cooperation and Culture, Director of IFI, explained that to study in France, one must be able to speak French. Currently, there are 7 people who were ready to go to France. It was also explained that many French entrepreneurs want to open business opportunities in Indonesia.

 

While USU Rector Prof. Syahril Pasaribu said, cooperation was carried out by several universities in Indonesia with universities in France. It is estimated that about 10 universities are cooperating, and later the ministry will be selected. There are many benefits of this cooperation, in the 1990s many of our lecturers studied in France, but stopped and now we will start again.(PR)
