PUBLIC RELATIONS FACULTY OF PHARMACY – The lecture faculty of pharmacy conducted community services on Monday, September 25, 2023, by giving a workshop on the utilization of coconut shell waste in the making of liquid smoke that can be used as a natural preservative for villagers at Pematang Pasir, Tanjung Balai. This activity was led by Prof. Dr. Masfria, M.S., Apt., and several members, such as Prof. Dr. Muchlisyam, M.S., Apt., Prof. Dr. Julia Reveny, M.Si., Apt., and Hafid Syahputra, S.Farm., M.Si., Apt. Several students of Bachelor Pharmacy were also involved in this agenda, for instance, Irfan Syafti, Agnes Valencia, Clarissa Henry, Hanna Murti Sihombing, and Hilmy Hidayat Gea, and two master degree students of pharmaceutical sciences, apt. Hardiyanti Rukmana, S.Farm., and Lusi Mardika Ariyanti, S.Farm.

This activity was the implementation of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM), which can make students interact and share their knowledge directly with the community. The topic that was shared was the dangers of using formaldehyde in food products and how to process coconut shell waste into liquid smoke as a natural preservative. Furthermore, it was continued by a workshop to make and purify liquid smoke and its use as a natural preservative for fish.

According to Prof. Masfria, this community service is essential to conduct due to its benefit in improving the knowledge of villagers at Pematang Pasir Tanjung Balai about the utilization of coconut shell waste that can easily be found in this area. This utilization is also done in order to avoid the use of formaldehyde for preservatives. Formaldehyde is not allowed to be used as a fish's preservative because of its side effects on the body.

The head villagers of Pematang Pasir Tanjung Balai expressed their gratitude because the Faculty of Pharmacy lectures and students taught the community patiently.
