The Faculty of Pharmacy of the Universitas Sumatera Utara held a top scientist seminar themed “Korean Traditional Medicine and its Application” on August 22, 2024, with speaker Prof. Bonglee Kim from Kyung Hee University, South Korea. The seminar was attended by around 150 participants, discussing the importance of Korean medicine that emphasizes individual pathophysiology, as well as the great prospects for the development of traditional medicine in the future.

USU PHARMACY PUBLIC RELATIONS – Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara held a top scientist seminar with the theme Korean Traditional Medicine and its Application: Collaborations and Future Plans with Indonesia on Thursday (22/8), at 09.30 WIB - end at the 2nd floor hall of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara.

The seminar was opened by the Vice Dean III, Marianne, S.Si., M.Si., Apt. The speaker presented at this top scientist seminar was Prof. Bonglee Kim, M.D. (KMD), Ph.D, professor at the College of Korean Medicine, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, South Korea. Prof. Bonglee Kim is the Head of the Department of Pathology and Chair of the Department of Cancer Preventive Material Development. In addition, he is also the group leader of the Korean Medicine-Based Drug Repositioning Cancer Research Center.

This top scientist seminar was moderated by Dr. Rony Abdi Syahputra, M.Farm, as the moderator. It was attended by approximately 150 participants, including students of the Master and Doctoral Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences, lecturers at the USU Faculty of Pharmacy, guests who were students of the USU Undergraduate Program in Pharmacy, and representatives from the USU Faculty of Medicine.

According to Prof. Bonglee Kim, the most important thing about Korean medicine is that it emphasizes the nature of the human body that produces disease rather than the disease itself. Thus, Korean medicine focuses on the pathophysiology of each individual. The main forms of therapy in Korean medicine include acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal therapy, chuna, cupping, and SCM (Sasang Constitutional Medicine). Traditional medicine is more desirable and trusted by the public than modern medicine. This is not only the case in Indonesia but also in Korea. This condition is his reference that the prospect of Traditional Korean Medicine is quite large, so it needs to be continuously developed with various techniques and technologies.
