The USU Faculty of Pharmacy carried out a community service program at SMA Negeri 4 Tebing Tinggi with the theme of essential oil purification from lime peel waste. This activity equipped the school’s science club students with practical skills and entrepreneurial insights based on local resource utilization.
USU FACULTY OF PHARMACY PR – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), carried out a community service activity at SMA Negeri 4 Tebing Tinggi with the theme “Enhancing Youth Scientific Group Entrepreneurship Skills through Essential Oil Purification from Lime Peel Waste.” This program aimed to empower students, particularly those in the Youth Scientific Group (KIR), to gain practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge based on the utilization of natural local resources.
This activity involved a team of lecturers and students from the Faculty of Pharmacy USU, along with teachers and students of SMA Negeri 4 Tebing Tinggi. The main focus was given to KIR members as the primary participants, as the group is considered potential in developing creativity, research, and entrepreneurial innovation.
The community service program provided hands-on training on essential oil purification techniques from lime peel waste, which has been underutilized. Through simple distillation and purification methods, students were introduced to appropriate technology that can produce value-added products. Beyond technical aspects, participants also received materials on small business management, marketing strategies, and an understanding of local economic potential.
The activity was conducted on August 29, 2025, in the form of an interactive workshop, starting with theoretical presentations followed by mini-laboratory practices at the school.
The event was held at SMA Negeri 4 Tebing Tinggi, chosen as the location because the school actively develops youth scientific activities and has strong support for research-based entrepreneurship skills development.
The theme was selected because Tebing Tinggi is known as one of the lime-producing regions, but its peel waste remains underutilized. In fact, lime peel contains essential oils with great potential as raw materials for health products, cosmetics, and aromatherapy. With this training, students are expected to recognize business opportunities while fostering entrepreneurial spirit from an early age.
The activity was implemented using a participatory educational approach. The lecturers provided theoretical materials, after which the participants worked in groups to practice essential oil purification using simple equipment applicable at home or school. Next, participants were trained to create simple derivative products such as natural cleaners and air fresheners.
This activity aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
SDG 4 (Quality Education): providing quality education through knowledge and technology transfer to students.
SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): encouraging youth entrepreneurship skills to open new economic opportunities based on local potential.
SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production): teaching the utilization of lime peel waste into value-added products, supporting sustainable production.
SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): strengthening partnerships between universities and secondary schools to enhance education and community empowerment.
Through this activity, the USU Faculty of Pharmacy emphasized its commitment not only in academics but also in supporting community empowerment and youth development through applied knowledge. It is hoped that students of SMA Negeri 4 Tebing Tinggi can become innovative and creative change agents in managing local resources for the future welfare of society.
