Students from Assyifa Health Vocational School Kisaran participated in a pharmacology practicum and laboratory visit at the USU Faculty of Pharmacy to observe real pharmaceutical practices.

USU FACULTY OF PHARMACY PR — The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), received an educational visit from Assyifa Health Vocational School Kisaran on Monday, November 17, 2025, at 09.00 WIB, as part of an academic and laboratory introduction program for health vocational school students. The activity was centered in the 1st Floor Hall of the USU Faculty of Pharmacy before all participants were directed to the laboratory rooms to attend the practicum agenda.

This visit was welcomed directly by the faculty leadership representatives, lecturers, and laboratory staff who delivered an initial presentation on the profile of the USU Faculty of Pharmacy, educational pathways, and career opportunities in the pharmaceutical field. In their remarks, the faculty emphasized that open laboratory visits such as this are a form of USU’s commitment to supporting scientific literacy and facilitating cross-level learning.

After the opening session, students and accompanying teachers entered the main agenda, a pharmacology practicum using mice as test animals. At this stage, the students received detailed explanations regarding basic pharmacology concepts, including mechanisms of drug action, biological responses of test animals, and ethical standards for the use of experimental animals. The laboratory team demonstrated proper handling techniques for mice, procedures for observing pharmacological effects, and correct data recording methods for analysis.

Throughout the practicum, students appeared enthusiastic and actively asked questions related to the scientific process they observed directly. Many expressed that it was their first time seeing a university laboratory in action and felt that the experience broadened their understanding of how pharmaceutical science is applied in research. This activity also offered students the opportunity to practice critical thinking by comparing the theories learned at school with real laboratory practices.

In addition, accompanying teachers considered the visit highly beneficial in increasing students’ motivation to learn, especially for those interested in pursuing higher education in the health sector. The school expressed appreciation for the USU Faculty of Pharmacy’s willingness to organize a structured, safe, and practical educational visit that provided valuable experiences not easily obtained in the school environment.

The activity concluded with a documentation session and the delivery of an inspirational message from the faculty, encouraging students to continue nurturing interest in science and health. Through collaborations like this, the USU Faculty of Pharmacy hopes to continue contributing to improving the quality of health education at the secondary school level and fostering a young generation prepared to face challenges in the scientific field.

This activity contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely:

  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: improving students’ understanding of health research and the use of test animals in pharmacology.

  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: expanding access to quality learning through direct laboratory experiences.

  • SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure: introducing modern research facilities and the innovation process in scientific development.

  • SDG 17 – Partnership for the Goals: strengthening collaboration between higher education institutions and secondary schools in supporting human resource development.
