Summary of the Promovenda’s Dissertation:
Numerous studies indicate low medication adherence among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients, necessitating interventions to improve adherence. One such intervention is a medication reminder app. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a digital medication reminder intervention on medication adherence and clinical outcomes in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

The study employed a mixed-methods design for phases I and II, conducted from August 2021 to June 2022 in healthcare facilities in Medan, followed by qualitative research. Phase III was a quasi-experimental study using a one-group pre-test and post-test design conducted from February to May 2024 in hospitals and public health centers in Medan.

Participants were outpatient type 2 diabetes mellitus patients who used the medication reminder app DiaCare on their smartphones. Respondents were assessed using the DKQ-24 questionnaire to measure knowledge, MARS-5 to measure adherence, and DQoL to measure quality of life. Data were analyzed using SPSS. Key findings included:

  1. No correlation between respondents' characteristics and their knowledge or adherence levels.

  2. Major factors influencing non-adherence included fear of side effects, forgetfulness, laziness, boredom, running out of medication, feeling healthy, and financial issues.

  3. The DiaCare app increased adherence by 30%, reduced fasting blood glucose by 23.3%, and improved quality of life by 23.3%.

The DiaCare medication reminder app proved effective in enhancing medication adherence and clinical outcomes in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

CONGRATULATIONS & SUCCESS to Dr. Embun Suci Nasution, M.Farm., Klin., Apt., for earning her Doctorate degree.
