In a solemn ceremony under the guidance of spiritual leaders, 60 students of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), who had completed the Pharmacist Professional Program and passed the Indonesian Pharmacist Competency Examination (UKAI), took their oaths according to their respective religions. The event was held in the Faculty of Pharmacy Hall, USU, on Thursday, March 15, 2018. Representing the Rector of USU, Vice Rector II, Prof. Dr. dr. Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, M.Ked. (O.G.), Sp.O.G. (K.), attended the event.
The ceremony was also attended by representatives from the Provincial Health Office of North Sumatra, Medan City Health Office, the National Pharmacy Committee (KFN), the Central Board of the Indonesian Pharmacists Association (IAI), Haji Adam Malik General Hospital, Dr. Pirngadi General Hospital, PT Kimia Farma Sumut and Medan, the Medan Branch of the Indonesian Doctors Association, the IAI boards of North Sumatra and Medan, and leaders of private pharmacy education institutions in Medan.
Vice Rector II, Prof. Dr. dr. Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, M.Ked. (O.G.), Sp.O.G. (K.), congratulated the newly sworn-in pharmacists and their families. He emphasized that this oath-taking ceremony was not merely symbolic but must be sincerely embraced as it concerns human life.
He further highlighted that the pharmacist profession requires skills, precision, and the ability to provide accurate information to the public about medicines and their proper use. He also encouraged alumni to uphold the good name of their alma mater and maintain communication with Universitas Sumatera Utara wherever their careers may take them.
The Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Dra. Masfria, M.S., Apt., stated that out of 79 students in the Odd Semester of the 2017/2018 Academic Year, 60 (75.9%) had graduated, while the remaining students would complete their studies through subsequent processes.
Since 2006, the Faculty of Pharmacy, USU, has graduated 2,111 pharmacists. Overall, USU has produced 3,285 pharmacists, including 1,174 graduates when Pharmacy was still part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (F-MIPA).
A representative of the National Pharmacy Committee, Dra. Suzanna Indah Astuti, M.Si., Apt., emphasized the significant role of pharmacists in the Nusantara Sehat National Program, especially in strengthening healthcare services in remote and border areas.
Meanwhile, the representative of the Central Board of the Indonesian Pharmacists Association (PP IAI), Dra. Aluwi Nirwana Sari, M.Pharm., Apt., encouraged graduates to promptly apply for their Pharmacist Practice License (SIPA) to practice in pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, distribution, or industries. She also urged alumni to consider building their careers in regional areas, where the demand for pharmacists remains high.
The oath to serve faithfully to God and uphold humanitarian values marked the beginning of a new journey for these young pharmacists, who looked elegant in their white pharmacist coats. The Pharmacist Professional Program and the Bachelor of Pharmacy Program at USU have received an A accreditation from LAM-PTKes since August 2017, valid until 2022.
