The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), welcomed students from PrimeOne School Medan for an educational visit introducing them to the world of pharmacy, research, and healthcare professions. Through this activity, students gained practical insights into the drug development process and the crucial role of pharmacists in society.
USU Pharmacy Public Relations – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), welcomed students from PrimeOne School Medan in an educational visit held at the Faculty’s auditorium, followed by a laboratory tour that allowed students to learn more closely about the world of pharmaceutical education, research, and career prospects in healthcare.
The visit aimed to foster students’ interest and understanding of pharmaceutical sciences from an early age. In today’s global era, the need for professional pharmacists continues to rise, making it essential for the younger generation to understand the role of pharmacists in maintaining public health. Through this program, the USU Faculty of Pharmacy seeks to broaden high school students’ perspectives on the dynamics of pharmaceutical education and its contributions to society.
The event began in the morning with participant registration, followed by a welcoming session in the Faculty of Pharmacy auditorium. The event was officially opened by the MC, followed by a welcome speech from a Faculty representative who introduced the Faculty’s brief history, academic programs, and its role in advancing pharmaceutical research at national and international levels. A representative from PrimeOne School then expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and valuable opportunity to introduce pharmacy to their students.
After the opening session, the event continued with an interactive presentation on pharmaceutical science. PrimeOne School students learned about how medicines are discovered, developed, and produced, as well as the pharmacist’s crucial role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of drugs available to the public. The presentation was delivered in accessible language, helping students grasp the essence of pharmaceutical knowledge despite still being in secondary school.
The highlight of the visit was the laboratory tour, during which students explored several laboratories at the USU Faculty of Pharmacy, including the pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical technology, and research laboratories. They observed modern equipment used by students and researchers while receiving direct explanations about each instrument’s function.
At the end of the event, students, teachers, and lecturers took a group photo as a memento of the visit. The activity concluded with a closing statement from the MC, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between schools and universities in nurturing future generations through education.
Through this visit, PrimeOne School students gained new understanding that pharmacy is not just about medicine but also about research, innovation, and health service. They also learned about the vital role of higher education institutions—especially the USU Faculty of Pharmacy—in producing qualified health professionals.
This activity directly supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
SDG 4 (Quality Education): Providing hands-on learning experiences outside the classroom, expanding students’ knowledge about higher education and health sciences.
SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being): Instilling early awareness of pharmacy’s role in maintaining public health and promoting healthy lifestyles.
SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production): Introducing students to responsible and sustainable drug research and production through demonstrations in the laboratory.
SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): Strengthening collaboration between universities and schools as part of cross-level educational partnerships.
The USU Faculty of Pharmacy expressed its appreciation for the visit from PrimeOne School and hopes similar activities will continue in the future. Through such initiatives, more young people can learn about the pharmaceutical field and be inspired to contribute to public health. This event not only provided new knowledge but also meaningful experiences that will leave a lasting impression on the students for their future journey.
