The USU Faculty of Pharmacy served as a co-organizer of ICOPS 2025 at IIUM Kuantan, a strategic step to strengthen international reputation and global research collaboration.

USU PHARMACY PR — The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU Faculty of Pharmacy), once again affirms its international presence through its important role as a co-organizer of the International Conference on Pharmaceutical Sciences (ICOPS) 2025, an international scientific conference held at the Kulliyyah of Pharmacy, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Kuantan. The presence of the USU Faculty of Pharmacy in this international organizing structure is part of the faculty's strategic efforts to strengthen academic standing, expand research networks, and enhance the quality of cross-country scientific collaboration.

The two-day conference, held on 26–27 November 2025, served as an annual gathering for scientists, researchers, educators, students, and healthcare industry practitioners from various countries. They convened to discuss the latest developments in pharmaceutical sciences, ranging from innovations in pharmaceutical preparations, biotechnology-based formulation technology, clinical pharmacy, drug safety, to the development of pharmaceutical services that are more responsive to global community needs. The participation of hundreds of attendees from various international institutions demonstrates the high level of interest in this scientific forum and the relevance of ICOPS in supporting the advancement of global pharmaceutical knowledge.

As a co-organizer, the USU Faculty of Pharmacy held strategic responsibilities in technical coordination with the IIUM organizing committee. This involvement demonstrates that the USU Faculty of Pharmacy is not only present as a participant, but also contributes to shaping the direction of the conference at the international level. In addition, the USU Faculty of Pharmacy also sent a delegation consisting of lecturers and students to present various leading studies focusing on nanotechnology, pharmacology, phytochemistry, and the development of natural-product-based drugs. These presentations underscore Indonesia's research contributions within the global pharmaceutical discourse.

The selection of IIUM Kuantan as the conference venue carries its own strategic significance. The academic relationship between the USU Faculty of Pharmacy and the IIUM Kulliyyah of Pharmacy has long been established through academic cooperation agreements, collaborative research, and knowledge exchange in various scientific activities. Through ICOPS 2025, both institutions strengthen their commitment to cooperation in broader areas, including plans for joint research development, student exchange, joint publications in international journals, and potential implementation of double-degree or joint-supervision programs in the future.

Throughout the conference, various discussion sessions generated important insights into emerging challenges in the field of pharmacy, including the need for safer and faster drug innovations and the challenges of antimicrobial resistance. Participants gained diverse international perspectives that enriched academic understanding while strengthening the ability to adapt to global paradigm shifts in the pharmaceutical world.

The USU Faculty of Pharmacy delegation also had the opportunity to build new networks with researchers from universities in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. Informal meetings and networking forums facilitated by the committee opened new collaboration prospects expected to generate long-term research and joint publications. Intensive discussions occurring outside presentation rooms—such as during poster sessions, coffee breaks, and social events—became the starting point for various new ideas that could be developed into collaborative research projects.

The involvement of the USU Faculty of Pharmacy in ICOPS 2025 provides benefits not only for lecturers and students, but also strengthens the institution's image as a faculty actively contributing to the development of pharmaceutical sciences in the Southeast Asian region. By being part of the organizing committee, the USU Faculty of Pharmacy gains a strategic position in determining the direction of international scientific activities that significantly influence improvements in pharmaceutical education quality, research development, and professional advancement in the future.

This program supports the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being:
Through strengthening research in health sciences, drug formulation innovations, and discussions on global challenges such as antimicrobial resistance and improved access to quality healthcare services.

SDG 4 – Quality Education:
By expanding opportunities for knowledge exchange, strengthening academic capacity for lecturers and students, and providing an international learning platform through scientific presentations and research collaboration.

SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure:
Through encouraging pharmaceutical research innovation, developing more effective formulation technologies, and integrating research with the healthcare industry to produce relevant and applicable solutions.

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals:
By strengthening global partnerships between the USU Faculty of Pharmacy, IIUM, and various other international institutions in research, publication, education, and the development of pharmacy science based on sustainable collaboration.
