Lecturers from the USU Faculty of Pharmacy conducted community service with education and training on carrot yogurt production in Rumah Berastagi Village. This activity aims to improve community nutrition and create local business opportunities with economic value.

USU Faculty of Pharmacy Public Relations – As part of its commitment to implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in Community Service (PkM), lecturers from the USU Faculty of Pharmacy conducted an activity with the theme “Education and Training on Carrot Yogurt Production to Improve the Economy and Nutrition of the Community in Rumah Berastagi Village” on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

The activity involved a team of lecturers from the USU Faculty of Pharmacy who went directly to Rumah Berastagi Village, Karo Regency, North Sumatra. They provided education on the benefits of carrots as a source of beta-carotene, vitamin A, and antioxidants, as well as training the community to process them into healthy yogurt products with added economic value.

In addition to nutrition counseling, participants received practical training in carrot yogurt production, from preparing ingredients, fermentation processes, packaging, to simple marketing strategies so that the product could be developed into a household business.

The program was conducted at the Rumah Berastagi Village Hall and involved dozens of residents, including housewives, youth, and farmers’ groups. The event took place on August 5, 2025, with a lively atmosphere and active participation from the local community.

The lecturer team emphasized that Rumah Berastagi Village has great potential in agriculture, particularly in carrots, which are abundant. However, carrot harvests are often sold fresh at low prices. Through this activity, carrots are processed into products with high nutritional value as well as better market value.

“With product innovations such as carrot yogurt, the community not only gains health benefits but also opens new business opportunities that contribute to increasing family income,” said one of the lecturers.

The activity began with a session on the importance of balanced nutrition and consuming healthy processed foods, followed by a demonstration on carrot yogurt production. Participants were directly involved in making the product, allowing them to understand the techniques and quality required to produce safe, hygienic, and consumer-friendly yogurt.

Participants were also provided with simple strategies in branding, attractive packaging, and marketing through social media and local markets. Thus, carrot yogurt not only serves as personal consumption but also has potential as an MSME product.

This PkM activity supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 2 (Zero Hunger): supporting food security through the utilization of local resources for dietary diversification.

  • SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being): promoting healthy eating habits through nutritious food products.

  • SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): creating business opportunities based on local products with economic value.

  • SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production): promoting sustainable and value-added processing of agricultural products.

Through this education and training, the community of Rumah Berastagi Village is expected to develop carrot yogurt products as competitive local businesses while improving family health through nutritious food consumption.

The USU Faculty of Pharmacy emphasizes its commitment to actively empowering communities through research-based innovations, education, and the application of pharmaceutical knowledge beneficial to daily life.
