The USU Faculty of Pharmacy conducted a community service program at SMA Labschool Banda Aceh through training on making skin-friendly liquid soap from lime peel waste. This activity aims to enhance students’ entrepreneurship skills while introducing the concept of a circular economy.
USU Faculty of Pharmacy Public Relations – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), carried out a community service program at SMA Labschool Banda Aceh with the theme “Enhancing Students’ Entrepreneurship Skills Through the Production of Allergen-Free Liquid Soap Containing Essential Oil from Lime Peel Waste.” This activity took place in 2025 as part of USU’s commitment to implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.
The program involved a team of lecturers and students from the USU Faculty of Pharmacy who directly guided students in understanding the basic concepts of producing health and hygiene products that are skin-friendly. The liquid soap, formulated with essential oils from lime peel waste, was chosen for its fresh scent, antibacterial potential, and safety for sensitive skin.
This community service activity was designed not only to train students to produce beneficial products but also to cultivate entrepreneurship among the younger generation. By utilizing lime peel waste that is often discarded, students were introduced to the concept of a circular economy, transforming waste into economically valuable products.
During the training, participants received instruction on the benefits of essential oils, basic liquid soap-making techniques, and simple product marketing strategies. This approach is expected to develop practical skills that could serve as a foundation for students to develop small businesses based on local innovations.
According to the community service team, the activity was chosen because Banda Aceh is one of the regions with significant lime production. This potential offers great opportunities to process peel waste into value-added products while reducing environmental pollution.
This activity supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being): producing hygienic and safe liquid soap products.
SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): fostering entrepreneurship among students.
SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production): utilizing lime peel waste as raw material.
SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): strengthening collaboration between universities and secondary schools.
Through this program, the USU Faculty of Pharmacy not only imparts knowledge but also provides practical skills that students can apply directly. It is expected that SMA Labschool Banda Aceh will foster a creative, innovative, and environmentally conscious young generation with entrepreneurial skills based on local potential.
