USU Faculty of Pharmacy lecturers carried out community service with the theme of Empowering students as young pharmacists to apply the Smart Community Movement Using Medicines (GeMa CerMat).

If there is a known term “Little Doctor” or “Little Red Cross,” then it occurred to empower students by forming a “Young Pharmacist.” The aim is to introduce or branding the pharmacist profession, socializing the roles and functions of pharmacists. Thus, training participants are expected to become health cadres at school who provide and disseminate information on the rational use of drugs to friends, family, and the community as an application of GeMa CerMat.
In this service, the service team used the Active Student Learning Method (CBSA) which is effectively used for health education. In this case, the rational use of drugs, especially in the use of self-medication.
“This method is divided into three activities; the first and second activities are done in groups. Then, the third activity is done individually at home and evaluated in the next meeting,” said Embun.
In the activity, the students were provided with material on examples of rational drug use. Then, a practice session was conducted, where participants were given self-medication drugs and filled out an exercise form in relation to GeMa CerMat, namely what is the name and composition of the drug, what are the indications of the drug, how to use the drug, what is the right dose and be aware of side effects.
“In addition, we also played the GeMa Cermat song (ask 5O) where the facilitator and participants sang the song together so that the training was fun and the information provided was easily remembered by the participants,” she explained.
