The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held Book Chapter, International IP, and KATSINOV Training on September 30, 2025, to strengthen academic capacity and research innovation. The event featured three expert speakers who provided insights on publication strategies, intellectual property protection, and innovation readiness for lecturers and researchers.
USU Pharmacy PR – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), once again demonstrated its commitment to strengthening academic and research capacity by organizing the Book Chapter, International IP, and KATSINOV (Innovation Readiness Level) Training on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. The event took place at the Meeting Room, 2nd Floor, Faculty of Pharmacy USU, from 08.30 to 12.30 WIB, attended by lecturers and researchers.
The training featured three competent speakers in their respective fields. Prof. Dr. dr. Dina Keumala Sari, M.Gizi, Sp.GK(K), Professor of the USU Faculty of Medicine, shared insights on strategies for writing book chapters that can reach international publication standards. Buchari, S.T., M.Kes., IPM, Head of the Industrial Research Development and Advancement Board (BPR), discussed the importance of innovation readiness in research through KATSINOV measurement. Meanwhile, Dr. Irwana Nainggolan, M.Sc, Manager of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) at USU, emphasized the significance of protecting research outcomes through international IP registration.
The topics discussed in this event covered three essential aspects. First, Book Chapter writing, as a means of international publication to enhance academic reputation and global knowledge contribution. Second, International Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), which provide protection and economic value for lecturers’ and researchers’ intellectual works. Third, KATSINOV, as an indicator of research innovation readiness for practical implementation in communities and industries.
Held on September 30, 2025, the event served as a crucial momentum toward the end of the academic year to reinforce strategies in publication, intellectual property protection, and innovation development. The training was conducted at the 2nd Floor Meeting Room of the USU Faculty of Pharmacy, which has long served as a hub for discussion, collaboration, and capacity-building among the academic community.
The main objective of this activity was to enhance lecturers’ and researchers’ capacity in three key areas: international publication, intellectual property protection, and innovation readiness. Through this training, the USU Faculty of Pharmacy aims to encourage more scientific works that not only achieve academic recognition but also generate tangible impacts for sustainable development through the utilization of research outputs.
The training was carried out through presentation sessions, interactive discussions, and Q&A sessions. Participants gained both theoretical understanding and practical strategies applicable to their academic activities—from preparing international-standard book chapters and registering international IPs to assessing research innovation readiness using KATSINOV instruments.
This activity supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
SDG 4 (Quality Education): enhancing the academic skills of lecturers and researchers in writing and publishing scientific works.
SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure): promoting innovative research development and ensuring the applicability of research outcomes in society and industry.
SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): strengthening collaboration among academics, practitioners, and institutions in building a sustainable research ecosystem.
With the successful implementation of this training, the USU Faculty of Pharmacy reaffirms its role as an educational institution that not only focuses on teaching but also actively promotes scientific development, intellectual property protection, and the creation of impactful innovations. This program serves as a strategic step in cultivating a globally oriented yet locally impactful research culture, in line with USU’s vision to become a world-class university contributing to sustainable development.
