Universitas Sumatera Utara successfully hosted the 54th Indonesian Medicinal Plants National Seminar, exploring alang-alang and andaliman as potential hypertension treatments. Held on April 26–27, 2018, in Medan, the event featured national and international researchers.

Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) successfully hosted the 54th Indonesian Medicinal Plants National Seminar, organized by the Faculty of Pharmacy in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Research and Technology, the Provincial Health Office of North Sumatra, and the Indonesian Pharmacists Association (IAI).

The seminar, themed “Exploration, Preservation, and Sustainable Utilization of Indonesian Medicinal Plants”, focused on Imperata cylindrica (alang-alang) and Zanthoxylum sp. (andaliman) with a subtheme “Utilization of North Sumatra’s Medicinal Plants as Hypertension Drug Candidates”. It was held over two days, April 26–27, 2018, at Hotel Polonia, Medan.

 

 

The event was inaugurated by the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara, Prof. Dr. Runtung Sitepu, S.H., M.Hum., who expressed his highest appreciation to the committee and contributors for their efforts and dedication to the success of this scientific event, which also elevated the reputation of Universitas Sumatera Utara.

 

 

The Rector highlighted Indonesia’s rich biodiversity, including alang-alang and andaliman, as valuable assets in pharmacological research. He emphasized that through synergistic research aligned with USU’s TALENTA competitive flagship fields, solutions could be developed to enhance drug production processes for the benefit of society.

 

 

The Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Dra. Masfria, M.S., Apt., expressed her pride in the Faculty’s opportunity to host this biannual event. She encouraged researchers to maximize the benefits of the seminar by sharing knowledge and building networks, especially in the field of Indonesian medicinal plants.

 

 

Led by Dr. Drs. Panal Sitorus, M.Si., Apt., the seminar also featured Sukanya Dejadisai, Ph.D., a researcher from Songkla University, Thailand, as the keynote speaker, presenting “Production of Herbal Medicine: From Research to Market”.

  • Dr. Eng. Hotmatua Daulay (Policy on strengthening university research related to medicinal plants)

  • Dr. Jansen Silalahi, M.App.Sc., Apt. (Andaliman as an anticancer agent)

  • Urip Harahap, Apt. (Alang-alang as an antihypertensive)

  • Alwi Thamrin Nasution, Sp.PD., KGH. (Latest developments in hypertension treatment)

  • Dr. Amri Amir, Sp.F(K)., DFM., S.H., Sp.AK. (Safety and efficacy of synthetic and herbal medicines for hypertension management)

  • Dr. Suwidjiyo Pramono, Apt., DEA. (Review of celery plants)

  • Benedicta Lamria Siregar, M.P., Dr. Drs. Panal Sitorus, M.Si., Apt., and Denny Satria, M.Si., Apt. (Introduction to andaliman and alang-alang).

 

 

During the event, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, USU, symbolically handed over the Indonesian Journal of Pharmaceutical and Clinical Research to the Rector of USU.
