USU Faculty of Pharmacy held another Doctoral Defense, presenting research on fatty acid composition in commonly consumed marine fish. The study supports SDG 3 and SDG 4 by advancing nutritional research and doctoral education quality.

USU Faculty of Pharmacy Public Relations – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), once again held a Doctoral Promotion Examination (Open Defense) for the Doctoral Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 2:00 PM WIB. Held at the IMG-GT Room, USU Rectorate Building, the event reflects the faculty’s continuous efforts to produce high-quality doctoral graduates in health research and pharmaceutical sciences.

During the open defense, doctoral candidate Yosy Cinthya Eriwaty Silalahi presented her dissertation entitled:
“Analysis of Fatty Acids and Their Positional Distribution in Triacylglycerol Molecules of Marine Fish in Medan City.”

The study investigates the fatty acid content and their molecular positions in triacylglycerol of various marine fish species commonly consumed by Medan residents. This research has significant value in nutrition and pharmaceutical science, especially regarding the bioactivity potential and health benefits of unsaturated fatty acids found in marine fish. It also promotes the utilization of local marine resources for public health benefits.

This doctoral examination is the highest academic milestone in the PhD program, where candidates are expected to defend their findings before a panel of academic examiners. The session was attended by faculty leadership, promoters and co-promoters, internal and external examiners, academic guests, and the candidate’s family.

The exam took place on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, starting at 2:00 PM in the IMG-GT Room of the USU Rectorate, which regularly hosts doctoral defenses and scientific forums.

The doctoral defense is a final stage in a PhD student's academic journey, assessing not only the content and validity of the dissertation but also the candidate’s theoretical understanding, research methodology, and scholarly contributions.

Yosy Cinthya Eriwaty Silalahi’s dissertation contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
By promoting the use of marine food sources as healthy fat alternatives, potentially reducing the risk of degenerative diseases.

  • SDG 4: Quality Education
By strengthening science-based higher education and producing competent doctoral graduates ready to advance academic, research, and societal development.

The defense was conducted in a dynamic academic atmosphere. The candidate delivered her presentation systematically, followed by critical discussions with senior academic examiners. Evaluation focused on the research findings, methodology, analytical sharpness, and application potential.

Through this defense, the USU Faculty of Pharmacy once again affirmed its role in nurturing competent, ethical, and globally responsive pharmaceutical scientists. The research outcomes are expected to lead to scientific publications, marine-based health products, and policies promoting functional food in the community.

The faculty remains committed to advancing research-driven higher education and innovation, in line with USU’s vision as a center of academic excellence and global partnerships.
