USU PHARMACY PR - USU Faculty of Pharmacy lecturers conducted community service activities in Buntu Bedimbar Village, Tanjung Morawa District, Deli Serdang Regency, on Saturday (13/8). This community service activity was chaired by Dr. Henni Cintya, S.Si., with members Dr. apt. Denny Satria, M.Si., and apt. Mahatir Muhammad, M.Si., and several USU Faculty of Pharmacy students.

This community service aims to educate the community about the application of functional food processing in stunting prevention. As the head, Dr. Henni Cintya, S.Si. explained, "Stunting is a condition of growth failure in children under five due to chronic malnutrition, especially in the first 1000 days of life. Several symptoms of stunting can be seen, such as weight not increasing and even tending to decrease, being susceptible to infectious diseases, slow growth, late tooth growth, and poor performance in focus and learning memory."

"Many factors cause stunting, such as lack of maternal knowledge about health and nutrition before and after pregnancy, lack of access to nutritious and expensive food, children are often sick, lack of clean water and sanitation, poor parenting, and limited health services. To prevent stunting, various things can be done, such as meeting the nutritional needs of children, providing exclusive breastfeeding until the baby is 6 months old, accompanying exclusive breastfeeding with complementary food for babies over 6 months to 2 years, providing basic immunizations, maintaining hygiene, and monitoring child growth and development."

The team explained that one way to help children's growth and development is to provide nutritious and clean food. On this occasion, the team processed pumpkin and moringa leaves to make cookies with an attractive appearance so that children would be interested in consuming them.

The management of Buntu Bedimbar Village really appreciated this service activity and thanked the team because this activity could add insight to housewives as well as PKK members so that in the future, they could be better and more careful in maintaining and monitoring children's growth and development and avoid stunting.
